For many years media education has been part of the Danish primary and secondary school, as it is obligatory to include media education in various subjects such as Danish, geography, maths, foreign language teaching and history.
But due to the fact that the teachers often lack skills in media education there is great variation in the extent media education is taught.
Much focus has been placed in recent years on technical expertise in media education. For instance, a 'driver's licence' in relation to computers is obligatory in school. What has been missing, however, has been a development of the critical and analytical approach to the media.
